Des Plaines city officials, Midwest Gaming & Entertainment LLC executives, representatives from the Illinois Gaming Board and other members of the Des Plaines community gathered April 16 for a groundbreaking ceremony to kickoff construction for the Des Plaines Casino.
The casino, a $445 million project, has been in the works since about 2001, and is anticipated to open in late summer 2011. The 147,000-square-foot facility will be located on the northwest corner of River Road and Devon Road, just one mile from O’Hare International Airport.
The casino, Illinois’ 10th, will feature a 43,000-square-foot casino floor, two restaurants, more than 1,100 slot machines, 30 gaming tables and an entertainment lounge. The project is anticipated to create hundreds of construction jobs as well as about 1,000 permanent jobs.
The city of Des Plaines anticipates about $20 million in profit each year along with more than $150 million in annual gaming tax revenue that will benefit the state, the city of Des Plaines and other nearby communities.
“[The casino] is an astonishing development given the current economic situation,” Mayor Marty Moylan said to the crowd at the groundbreaking ceremony. “Des Plaines will become a destination city—a tourism hub in the [Chicagoland] area. This casino is going to have an impact on the entire Midwest region.”
Neil Bluhm, Midwest Gaming chairman, also thanked Des Plaines’ previous mayor, Tony Arredia for his help in getting the project started before his term ended in early 2009.
“There have only been two other casinos started in the United States since the economic fallout, Bluhm said. “We want this to be the most exciting and successful casino in the state of Illinois.”
