The Discussion > Des Plaines Theater

So me and my kids went to the Des Plaines Theater to see Arctic Tale this past weekend and I was surprised to see so few people at the show. If they are to continue showing American movies, I would encourage people to spend the afternoon or evening downtown Des Plaines. It was a great time and brought back memories of the theater from when I was younger. Check out the shows coming soon.

I know Alderman Walsten is among the strongest supporters of this push for American movies in the Des Plaines Theater...I'll invite him to come and post. Hopefully he can shed some light on the future of this special project.

Alderman Bogusz and 3rd Ward Res.,
DEEP GREEN has been showing movies at the DP theater as a fund raising event and also to bring more people to the downtown area to hopefully shop and go out to dinner.
Many of the restrants are willing to offer discounts if you combine 'dinner and a movie'.
We will have one or two more movies in June and than brack until the fall, (the air conditioning doesn't work very well).
Please tell everyone you know to come out to the the movies!

Thanks,

Alderman Mark Walsten

Hi Almdermen Walsten and Bogusz,

It seems to me that if there was a way to fix the A/C and run more interesting or popular (even months after release) movies, there would be blockbuster business in the summer...I wouldn't mind going there in the summer with the kiddos to get out of the sun for a while, and support a local business! And I would go there more often in the winter if there were better movies. If I lived anywhere near walking distance to the Pickwick, I would be there all the time!

Thanks, Elisa

Business is business and government is government and the more the two are separate the better it is for customers and taxpayers.

If the owner of the DP Theater wants to run Indian movies and not fix the AC he is free to do so and the public will vote with their feet and their wallets.

Would (and should?) our Aldermen publically demand that an Indian restaurant owner to serve cheeseburgers because that's "American food"?

The closest movie theatre in the area similar to the DesPlaines Theatre is the Pickwick in Park Ridge. If anyone wants to see the right way to run a vintage movie theatre, take a 15 minute ride into Park Ridge and see a movie in the original 1,400 seat theatre. After the movie, you can stop at the Pickwick Restaurant for a bite to eat. The DesPlaines Theatre experience use to be like this a long time ago. A change in ownership and total restoration of the Des Plaines Theatre is needed for it to return to being viable. I don't see either occurring anytime soon.
