The Discussion > Airport Noise

So now that the new runway at the airport is open it has become obvious where the new noise is going to be. The question is Matt, is Chicago still going to be sound proofing and insulating homes in Des Plaines. The area off Scott St. where some of my family lives had their home insulated and sound proofed, but now has little to no noise from planes because the air traffic shifted; however, the area just west and north of Maine West seems to have more air traffic now. That would be the Third ward.

Let me get a Des Plaines-specific answer. I know there is a lot of federal and private money being spent on the O'Hare expansion....I'll report back. Eric...would you mind leaving your full name and address and maybe an email address? Thanks.

I'd like to second Eric's comment about how aircraft noise has certainly shifted and now seems concentrated at times north of Maine West. I too am curious about insulating/soundproofing options. I'll send my full contact info in an email toyou. Thank you.

Hey guys...I did some homework and this is what I've uncovered. There is a program administered by the City of Chicago and the O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission to insulate homes around both Chicago airports.

Here is a link that describes the program:
http://www.ohare.com/cnrc/ohare/ohareresidential.htm

Here is a link that lets you search your address for eligibility:
http://maps.cityofchicago.org/aviation/search.do?airport=O%27Hare

You can call the program's hot line (800) 435-9569 for a status update on this year's schedule of projects.

Sixth Ward Alderman Walsten and resident expert on O'Hare noise related issues has noted that Des Plaines currently has 840 soundproofed homes. Presently, only homes in the 65 DNL (Decibel Noise Level) contour qualify for this program. Further expansion of the project is expected to continue once the new configuration of O'Hare is complete.

I hope this answers your questions.

Matt I thank you for trying and I hope you continue to try it is nice to see the energy. The down side of you being so young is that what may seem new to you is really old. They have been doing this program for a LONG time. Throughout your ward you have noise monitors. I hope and only hope that they will continue to see that the noise is shifting to new areas and they need to be addressed. I understand that we should be calling the noise complaint number to register our complaints, but the City has to step up to the plate a fight for the residents.
